The waters from the Mont Blanc massif flow into the reservoir, which has a capacity of 225 million m³. The dam wall is 180 metres high, and the crest is 554 metres in length. When the reservoir is full, it submerges the former Barberine dam, built in 1925, by a depth of 42 metres.
The Emosson dam can be visited free of charge and without reservation during the tourist season from late June to late August. Paid Tours on request.

The road to the Emosson dam (for cars and coaches) is open in summer.
There is a coach service from Finhaut station (from june 12th to 26 september - from 10:10 am to 5:10pm) to the Gueulaz pass. There is a range of public transport facilities for tourists (www.chatelard.net) departing from Châtelard village, including a funicular railway, a high-altitude railway and a mini-funicular (inclined railway), all giving access to the top of the Emosson dam.![]() |
