Coat of Arms

"Two reds with the silver door, three dungeons of the same (which is the height of the Madeleine) and topped with two golden arrows in saltire."

So are the arms described by the Finhaut District archaeologist in 1931, when he hands the Commune its first joint with the newly created copper shield .

MEANING

The castle is the Gate of Valais, a fortified gate located near the Madeleine Châtelard-Frontier. It allowed to close the border in case of disturbances or outbreaks. The population of the town there stood guard. The gate was destroyed in 1888 when the township expanded the audit trail linking Chamonix to Martigny. Only a few traces of a wall remain .

The arrows represent the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian (3rd century), chosen as patron of the parish at its founding in 1649. St. Sebastian, the Roman army captain, was beaten and thrown into the sewers of Rome because of his Christian faith. His body was finally riddled with arrows. Upon incorporation of the parish, St. Sebastian was invoked to protect themselves from the plague.
