Châtelard-Frontière

Châtelard-Frontière lives off vehicular traffic on the international road of La Forclaz.

THE GATES TO VALAIS

The Châtelard-Frontier
village was born in the 19th century. Previously, the place was solely the door of Valais, a fortified gate for closing the border in case of disturbances or outbreaks. A commercial area was created in 1840, thanks to the many passages of travelers. Two hotels were built: one near the Swiss border and the Hotel Royal to Madeleine (now destroyed) at the crossroads of the valley of Trento and Forclaz.

Before the train arrived in 1906, the site already lists a tobacco factory, a customs building and coffee shops. The station, designed to be the international break the Martigny-Chamonix has preserved its historic character.
